URL Cleaning

WebLibre includes two link tools under Settings > Browsing:

  • URL Cleaner removes known tracking parameters from links

  • Unshortener resolves supported short links to their destination

These tools are separate from Query Parameter Stripping in Settings > Privacy & Security.

URL Cleaner

What it does

Many links include extra text after the main address. That extra text often tells the destination site where you came from, which ad or post you clicked, or which campaign sent you there.

For example:

https://example.com/article?fbclid=abc123&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=summer

URL Cleaner removes known tracking parameters and keeps the useful address:

https://example.com/article

WebLibre uses a catalog of known rules and can remove well over 100 common tracking parameters.

What you may see in the app

When URL Cleaner is enabled and WebLibre finds removable tracking parameters in an HTTP or HTTPS link, you may see:

  • Tracking detected before the cleaned link is applied

  • URL cleaned after the cleaned link has been applied

You can tap that row to review the detected parameters.

Settings

In Settings > Browsing > URL Cleaner, you can change these options:

  • Enable URL Cleaner — turns URL Cleaner on or off

  • Auto-apply — automatically replace the original link with the cleaned version

  • Allow referral marketing — keep referral and affiliate parameters instead of removing them

  • Auto-update catalog — check weekly for rule updates

  • Update catalog — manually check for updates now

  • Restore defaults — reset the bundled catalog and URL Cleaner settings

If Auto-apply is off, WebLibre keeps the original link until you choose to apply the cleaned version.

What to expect

URL Cleaner is designed to remove tracking and similar unnecessary parameters. It does not guarantee that every long URL will become short, and some parameters may stay if they are needed for the link to work.

If Allow referral marketing is enabled, affiliate or referral codes may remain in the link.

Unshortener

What it does

Some links use shortener services so the real destination is hidden until the link is resolved. The Unshortener can look up supported short links and show their final destination before you open them.

This can help you:

  • see where a short link really goes

  • spot misleading links before opening them

  • decide whether you still want to visit the destination

How it works in WebLibre

When Enable Unshortener is turned on, WebLibre can show an Unshorten action for supported short links. Using it resolves the short link and replaces it with the final URL.

Important privacy note

Unshortener sends the link to the unshorten.me service to resolve it. The app also links to that service’s privacy policy in the Unshortener settings.

Avoid using Unshortener for links that contain private, personal, or sensitive information.

Settings

In Settings > Browsing > Unshortener, you can change these options:

  • Enable Unshortener — turns the feature on or off

  • API Token — optional token for higher API limits

The built-in free API is rate-limited to 10 requests per hour for new checks.

Where to find these tools
