Common Workflows
Here are step-by-step guides for things you might want to do with WebLibre. Each one shows you which features to use and how to set them up.
| If you do not see container options in the tab or menu UI, turn on Show Container UI in Settings > Browsing first. |
Browse More Anonymously
You want to research a sensitive topic, visit a site privately, or reduce how easily browsing can be linked to you.
Setup:
-
Open the browser menu, expand Connections, and start Tor
-
Create a container called "Anonymous" with Cookie Isolation enabled before saving it
-
Set the container’s Proxy Connection to Tor
-
Enable Resist Fingerprinting
When browsing:
-
Open tabs in the "Anonymous" container
-
Don’t log into any personal accounts
-
Use Request New Identity if you want a fresh Tor circuit
What this achieves:
-
Your internet provider sees Tor use instead of your destination websites
-
Websites see a Tor exit IP instead of your normal IP address
-
Cookies and logins in this container stay separate from your regular browsing
-
Fingerprinting is harder, though not impossible
|
Tor does not make you anonymous if you sign into personal accounts or otherwise identify yourself. Some sites may be slower or may block Tor traffic. |
Separate Work and Personal Life
You use your phone for both work and personal browsing, and want their cookies and logins kept separate.
Setup:
-
Create two containers, "Work" and "Personal", with Cookie Isolation enabled before saving each one
-
Edit the Work container and add Assigned Sites for your work tools, such as team chat, code hosting, or shared docs
-
Use different colors so you can recognize each container quickly
Daily use:
-
Work tabs open in the Work container automatically
-
Open personal sites in the Personal container or in regular tabs
-
Work cookies and logins stay separate from personal ones
Optional enhancements:
-
Turn on Clear Data on Exit for a container if you do not want it to stay signed in after the app restarts
-
Use profiles instead if you want a full split with separate bookmarks, history, feeds, extensions, and settings
Research a Sensitive Topic
You want to research something without it being connected to your identity or regular browsing.
Setup:
-
Create a container such as "Research" or "Sensitive" with Cookie Isolation enabled before saving it
-
Start Tor from the browser menu’s Connections section
-
Set the container’s Proxy Connection to Tor
-
Enable Resist Fingerprinting
The workflow:
-
Open the sites you want to research in that container
-
Avoid signing in to personal accounts during that session
-
When you are done, close the tabs in that container
-
If you want the container to start fresh next time, turn on Clear Data on Exit or use Clear Container Data
Alternative: Isolated tabs
For one-off storage separation, you can use isolated tabs instead:
-
Open an isolated tab
-
Use it for a one-off session you do not plan to keep
-
Close it when you are done so that isolated session ends
| An isolated tab is not routed through Tor automatically. You can assign Tor to that tab from Connections, or use the Tor-assigned container above for repeated browsing. |
Share a Device with Family
Multiple people use the same phone or tablet, and you want privacy from each other.
Setup:
-
Create profiles for each person:
-
Your profile
-
Partner’s profile
-
Kid’s profile
-
-
For any profile you want to protect, open Manage profiles and choose a profile password or device lock
-
Under Auto-lock, choose Lock after a timeout if you want a grace period
Daily use:
-
When you hand the phone to someone, they switch to their profile
-
WebLibre restarts into that selected profile
-
They only see their own bookmarks, history, tabs, feeds, and saved logins
-
Your data stays in your protected profile
For kids:
-
Use a separate profile
-
Consider stricter tracking protection settings
-
They do not get access to your logins or browsing data in your own profile
|
Device lock requires an Android screen lock. A Profile password is separate and does not use your device PIN or fingerprint. Neither method encrypts on-device profile data. See App Lock for the differences. |
Reduce Tracking While Shopping
You want to reduce how easily stores and advertisers connect your shopping to the rest of your browsing.
Setup:
-
Create a "Shopping" container with Cookie Isolation enabled before saving it
-
Don’t log into accounts unless necessary (guest checkout)
-
Turn on Clear Data on Exit if you want that container to start fresh after each app restart
The workflow:
-
Open shopping sites in the Shopping container
-
Browse and buy
-
After you’re done:
-
Close those shopping tabs
-
Use Clear Container Data if you want to remove that session immediately
-
What this achieves:
-
Shopping sites get a separate cookie jar from your regular browsing
-
Ad and login data from other containers does not carry into your shopping session
-
After clearing that container’s data, shopping sites treat it more like a new browser session
Cookie isolation does not prevent recognition through browser fingerprinting or account sign-ins, and it does not guarantee that prices will be unpersonalized.
Even more privacy:
-
Start Tor and choose it as the Shopping container’s Proxy Connection
-
This also hides your normal IP address from the shopping site, but may make checkout or fraud checks harder
Read News Without Algorithms
You want to follow news sources without an algorithm deciding what you see.
Setup:
-
Subscribe to RSS feeds from your preferred sources:
-
News sites (national, local, or specialist sources)
-
Blogs you like
-
Podcasts
-
-
Open Feeds from the main menu instead of relying on social feeds
Daily use:
-
Open Feeds from the main menu
-
See all new articles, in chronological order
-
Read what interests you
-
Search your saved feed articles later if you want to find something again
Benefits:
-
You choose your sources
-
You see everything they publish
-
No social-media ranking deciding what appears first
-
No separate feed-reader account required
Stay Logged In Where It Matters, Private Elsewhere
You want to stay logged into email and banking, but have everything else auto-clear.
Setup:
-
Create containers with Cookie Isolation enabled for sites you want to stay logged into:
-
"Essentials" container for email, banking, etc.
-
-
Save each container with that isolation choice so its login state stays separate
-
Choose the browser-wide cleanup items you want, such as Browsing history, Cached images and files, or Open tabs
-
Leave Clear Data on Exit turned off for the "Essentials" container
Daily use:
-
Email, banking in the Essentials container (you stay logged in)
-
Everything else in regular tabs or in throwaway containers
-
Use Quit to clear the selected data, or leave Also Delete on Start on to clear it at startup too
This gives you the convenience of saved logins where it matters, with the privacy of auto-clearing everywhere else.
|
If you include Cookies and site data in automatic deletion, regular sites will usually sign you out after cleanup. Container Clear Data on Exit is separate and only affects that container’s cookies and site data. |
Log Into Multiple Accounts on the Same Site
You have two (or more) accounts on a website and want to use them simultaneously.
Option 1: Containers
-
Create a container for each account (e.g., "Work Email", "Personal Email"), enabling Cookie Isolation before saving each one
-
Open the site in each container
-
Log into different accounts in each
-
Each container keeps its own cookies and login state
Option 2: Isolated Tabs
-
Open an isolated tab
-
Log into account A
-
Open another isolated tab
-
Log into account B
-
Each tab has its own session
Isolated tabs are faster for one-time use. Containers are better if you do this regularly or want site assignments.
Use Separate Web Apps for Work and Personal Accounts
You use the same service, such as webmail, for work and personal accounts, and want each to open like its own app.
Setup:
-
Open the site in a regular tab outside any container and sign in to your personal account
-
Open the browser menu and tap Add to Home Screen
-
Choose Install as App, name it "Personal Mail", and leave Storage at Default
-
Open the site again, tap Add to Home Screen, and choose Install as App
-
Name it "Work Mail" and set Storage to New isolated context
-
Open "Work Mail" from your home screen and sign in to your work account
If you already use a work container, use it instead of a fresh isolated context: open the site in that cookie-isolated container, then install "Work Mail" from that tab and keep the preselected container under Storage. The install dialog only offers the source tab’s container, not every container in the profile.
What this achieves:
-
Each web app opens in its own window from your home screen
-
Each keeps its own session, so signing out of one does not affect the other
-
A web app that uses a work container shares that container’s login state with your work tabs
| If you only see Add Shortcut, check that Settings > Browsing > Install Sites as Apps is on. It is on by default. See When the Option Appears. |
Build a Dedicated Space for a Project
You work on a project or for a client, and want its sites, logins, connection, and web apps kept together and apart from everything else.
Setup:
-
Create a container named after the project with Cookie Isolation enabled before saving it
-
Add Assigned Sites for the project’s tools
-
Optionally set the container’s Proxy Connection, such as a WireGuard profile for the project’s network. See Proxy Connections
-
Optionally turn on Exclude from History if you do not want these pages in your normal history
-
Open the project’s main tool in a tab in that container, then use Add to Home Screen to install it as a web app. The container is preselected
Daily use:
-
Assigned sites open in the project container automatically
-
The web app shares the container’s logins and connection
-
When you launch the web app from your home screen, WebLibre starts its required connection and waits before loading. Selecting the container inside the main browser may instead ask you to start the connection
| If the project needs its own extensions or settings, use a separate profile instead. |
Use WebLibre with a Keyboard and Mouse
You use a tablet, foldable, or a larger Android window and want tabs and controls suited to a keyboard, mouse, or trackpad.
Setup:
-
Open Settings > Toolbar & Layout > Tab Bar Position and choose Automatic for an adaptive layout, or Left or Right for a fixed side panel
-
On a larger screen, drag the side panel’s edge to show readable tab titles and controls, or narrow it to an icon rail
-
Optionally enable Auto Hide Side Panel in Settings > Toolbar & Layout. While using a mouse or trackpad, move the pointer to that screen edge to reveal the panel; touching the screen returns it beside the page
-
Press Ctrl+/ to see browser shortcuts. Use Customize, or open Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts, to change their assignments
-
If you use containers, try Tab Stacking > Accordion in Settings > Toolbar & Layout. On a wide side panel, several containers can stay expanded at once; a narrow panel shows one at a time
Daily use:
-
Use Ctrl+L for the address bar, Ctrl+T for a new tab, and Ctrl+Tab to switch tabs with the default shortcuts
-
Browser shortcuts work while a page has focus. Menus can show shortcut hints while using a mouse or trackpad or a wide window
-
Resizing the Android window changes the layout without changing your profile or browsing contexts. Desktop Site is a separate website-display choice, not a requirement for the side panel or keyboard controls
